Projects

The OpenMobileNetwork can be applied to any application that makes use of mobile network data. Projects and use cases in which this dataset is used are listed below.

Communicate Green

The project Communicate Green is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) within the IT2Green initiative.

In order to fulfill today's high demands on mobile network usage, mobile network providers in Germany have around 123.000 base stations working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with a total power consumption of approx. 1455 GWh per year. The permanent availabilty of those network components causes a significant energy consumption. Through an adaptive, context-aware and technology-comprehensive power management in mobile networks, a considerable amount of energy can be saved by maintaining the high quality of experience at the same time. There are a lot of contextual information present in mobile network components and end devices, which can help to calculate decisions for a dynamic de- and reactivation of network components (e.g., base stations).

The datasets in the LOD Cloud already provide a huge pool of contextual information interlinkable to each other that can be exploited for power management purposes such as points of interests described in DBpedia and LinkedGeoData or weather information coming from the Linked Sensor Data dataset. Interlinking mobile network data in the OpenMobileNetwork with data in the LOD Cloud will enable network optimizations in the mobile network that are based on this information basis.

Context Data Cloud

The Context Data Cloud project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) within the Software Campus initiative.

This project aims to develop a service enabler platform (run by a mobile network operator) that interconnects context providers, consumers as well as context-aware service developers for providing semantically enriched context-aware services. It is based on Linked Data and enables developers of context-aware services to easily realize innovative applications by making use of a set of novel interfaces (provided by the network operator).

Utilizing the OpenMobileNetwork, several Semantic Positioning Solutions can be realized that improve classic geofencing as well as geocoding methods and add semantic features to proactive self-referencing and cross-referencing LBS. This enables the implementation of various LBS scenarios, e.g., "tell the user whenever his daughter leaves school/arrives at home" or "tell the user whenever he reaches a restaurant serving dishes under a certain price that fit to his eating habits".
